Peter Newton

President, GateHouse Media Ventures

Peter Newton is president of GateHouse Media Ventures, a subsidiary of GateHouse Media focused on developing and scaling growth businesses. GHMV’s portfolio companies include Propel Marketing, provider of digital marketing services to local businesses.

Prior to joining GateHouse in 2012, Newton was president and founder of Big Rock Consulting Group, a strategic consulting firm specializing in helping media companies grow. BRCG developed strategies and go-to-market business plans for companies in areas such as creating and launching new products, deepening penetration in key customer and audience segments such as recruitment and small business, and upgrading overall sales and marketing capabilities. BRCG’s client base spanned traditional media such as newspapers and TV stations to digital startups.

Newton’s prior experience includes leading sales and development for Helium, a social media company. Helium is a Boston-area startup that’s developed the world’s largest online writing community, which produces content for Helium.com and other media companies.

Newton also previously worked at Monster.com, most recently as Senior Vice President & General Manager of Monster’s media alliances business, developing and operating partnerships with local media outlets. Monster grew from no newspaper partners to over 200 partners, and more than 120 TV station partners, in under 2 years.

Prior to that, Newton was Senior Vice President/General Manager, Small and Medium Business at Monster. He was responsible for overseeing and directing the entire Monster operation dedicated to growing the company's small- and medium-sized business (SMB) segment. This included driving the continued growth and expansion of Monster's business in key local markets throughout the United States.

Newton joined Monster after an 18-year career with The Boston Globe and Boston.com, where he served as Vice President of Advertising. During that time, he was also President of BostonWorks, the multimedia recruitment services division launched by The Globe in 2001. Prior to that, Mr. Newton worked at Arthur Andersen & Co. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame.
