Local Online Revenue Opportunities for Television and Radio Among Topics at Interactive Local Media 2008 Conference in Santa Clara

BIA and The Kelsey Group Gather Executives from Top Media Companies for Focused Conference Spotlighting SMB Advertiser Adoption of Web 2.0 Technologies

CHANTILLY, VA., – November 6, 2008 – There is a real revenue opportunity for television and radio stations across the country that will effectively leverage online and mobile technologies for local advertisers. This significant transition for traditional media will serve as a backdrop for the “Interactive Local Media 2008 (ILM:08)” conference, November 19-21 in Santa Clara California. ILM:08 is presented by The Kelsey Group, a division of BIA Advisory Services. Top executives from Comcast, NBC and Google will participate in a panel on “Leveraging Traditional Media’s Strengths Online,” co-moderated by Rick Ducey, Chief Strategy Officer of BIA and Peter Krasilovsky, Vice President and Program Director, Marketplaces for The Kelsey Group, and are expected to discuss their strategies in the local arena.

BIA’s first conference with The Kelsey Group since the October acquisition will provide a thorough examination of how the economy will impact local media and businesses. In addition to a focus on digital media, the annual conference will have an enhanced emphasis on the impact traditional media companies will experience over the next few years with regards to the advertising marketplace. BIA’s insight into market trends and their financial implications around the broader media market will complement The Kelsey Group’s perspectives on small-business advertising and online local media and search.

“In this environment of softened ad spending and tightened credit, traditional media need to make strategic investments in new media that will provide short and long-term results,” said Tom Buono, CEO and president of BIA. “At the ILM conference, we will discuss the economy and offer in-market advertising data that will help media companies, advisors, and financial institutions gain actionable information for their 2009 strategic plans.”

ILM:08, The Kelsey Group’s 16th conference devoted to digital media with a local focus, offers a 360-degree, cutting-edge examination of interactive local media, with in-depth views from top industry representatives about online video, local search, small-business targeting, multi-channel marketing, ad networks, community, local mobile and the investment climate. Other featured speakers include Angie Hicks, founder and CMO, Angie’s List; Brad Inman, founder and CEO, TurnHere; Mark Josephson, CEO, Outside.in; and, Rodney Rice, cochairman and founder, ServiceMagic.

The agenda of ILM:08 will examine the state-of-the-industry trends and provide a detailed examination of the investment picture. Sessions will include:

  • The State of Interactive Local, 4Q 2008

  • The Value (and Valuations) of Interactive Local Media

  • Localizing the Ad Nets: Display Channels

  • Ultimate Local Sales Workshop

The Kelsey Group will also be providing its recent insights in several key areas, notably the mobile market. According to a consumer study of U.S. mobile phone users conducted by The Kelsey Group with research partner ConStat, 18.9 percent of mobile consumers now use a smartphone. Among those surveyed, 49.2 percent plan to purchase an advanced mobile device within the next two years.  Corresponding with the rapid consumer adoption of smartphones is a marked increase in the level of mobile search activity. The Kelsey Group and BIA Advisory Services will provide commentary on its program through its blogs at http://blog.kelseygroup.com/ and http://www.blog.bia.com/.

We believe the introduction of more user-friendly smartphones is ushering in a new mobile paradigm where devices now offer an Internet experience that is as easy as traditional voice connectivity,” said Matt Booth, senior vice president and program director, Interactive Local Media, The Kelsey Group. “The implication is that users will increasingly turn to their smartphones for local commercial and social search experiences, and the data certainly suggest this is already happening.”

The future of mobile local search and advertising and the unfolding synergies between new and traditional media will be among the topics explored at ILM:08.
